Every year across North America, billions of dollars of potential lumber from urban trees is cut up as firewood, mulched or taken to the landfill. Additionally, urban trees are expensive to maintain and remove which has lead to a shrinking tree canopy where landowners are hesitant to plant large form trees on their property.
Wood from the City is the story of wood through the lens of urban trees. The first section is about conventional forestry, both industrial and small scale. The second section talks about how to turn that log lying in your yard into lumber and finished building products. The third section discusses how to intentionally grow urban trees for lumber so that at the end of the tree’s life, we have a plan to use it instead of throwing it in the garbage.
Wood from the City has high quality photographs, illustrations, and graphic design to describe the wood making process. Quality writing focused on giving you the information you need to understand the process. There are also several case studies showing how several folks have made urban lumber their life’s work.
This book for anyone wanting to mill urban trees into lumber or grow lumber producing trees but also broad enough for anyone that loves wood and wants to know more about how a tree is turned into finished building materials. So whether you’re a seasoned forester or sawyer, or a fledging woodworker or architect, this book is for you!
